Growing avocado as indoor plant

Avocados are grown in greenhouses and nurseries in the northern half of the United States and in Florida, and in other areas during the late summer when temperatures are cool and soil is moist.

During the winter, plant the bare root seedlings in a cold frame or cold garage to overwinter. To overwinter, simply bring the plants inside after the last frost in early spring.

The best time to plant seedlings is late June or early July, depending on the zone and the type of plant.

How to grow

Start by soaking the seeds overnight in cool water. Do not use tap water. Drain the seeds and discard the water.

Cover the seeds with a paper towel to keep them cool. Set the paper towel aside until the seeds are sprouted.

Place the sprouted seedlings on a sheet of paper in a bright, but not direct, light. The paper should be in a warm place where the temperature is about 70°F.

Water the seedlings daily and increase the water until the leaves feel slightly moist when you touch them. Water deeply once a week.

When the seedlings start to grow, the paper towel should be removed.

Light: High-light/full-spectrum lighting

Lighting: This indoor plant prefers bright but indirect light. Provide the plant with as much light as possible. If natural light is not sufficient, use one or more of the following.

High-intensity metal halide bulbs - HIDs

Lighting: This indoor plant requires a lot of light to grow quickly. Using full-spectrum light (color temperature: 8,000K to 10,000K) provides a plant with the most sunlight that is reflected back to the leaves.

Metal halide bulbs, also known as high-intensity discharge or HIDs, produce lots of light but also emit a lot of heat. Metal halide bulbs can grow plants very quickly. This bulb is great for this indoor plant as the heat it produces doesn't damage the leaves.

To reduce the heat a plant is exposed to, look for bulbs that produce fewer wavelengths of light. The lower the color temperature (color temperature: 2,700K to 4,000K), the less heat the bulbs will produce. A full-spectrum light bulb, such as a metal halide bulb, will emit a full spectrum of light, not just a few wavelengths.

A combination bulb is a mixture of both HIDs and CFLs, often used as starter bulbs.

To get started, choose a plant that has a very large leafy top.

A plant that starts with a very large leafy top is best for indoor growing. Large leaves are most effective for keeping the plant cool during hot weather.

Place the plant in a shallow dish of about 1/2 inch deep (one that is only the right size for your plant).

You may need to adjust the depth of the dish to the size of your plant.

After a month or two, your plant should have several new leaves with a green color. The new leaves are likely to look pale at first, but as they continue to grow, their colors will become more vibrant.

Plants require water to grow.

The amount of water a plant needs varies by plant. If you are planning on growing a plant for only a few weeks, then you may only need to water it once a week. However, for those that plan to grow their plants for a longer period of time, a plant that grows in a larger container should be watered twice a day.

A plant that starts out small and grows into a large plant should be watered often.

Keep a close eye on your plant.

Look over your plant regularly and make sure it has enough water. If a plant is not getting enough water, then you will need to add more to the dish.

Make sure your plant gets the right amount of water.
